The Night That Silenced The Violins 2016

– 29. 07. 2016

The 2nd of August has been imprinted in Roma and world history as one of the most fateful dates. On the eve of 2 August 1944, the Nazis abolished the Zigeunerlager” (“Gypsy camp”) in Auschwitz-Birkenau and in one single night killed about 2,900 Sinti and Roma.

At this year International Porrajmos Remembrance Day we are kindly inviting you to attend the memorial event The Night That Silenced the Violins.

We will honour the victims of Porrajmos with the lecture by Dr Vera Klopčič Roma as victims of the Genocide. The event will be moderated by Jasmina Ahmetaj.

The event will be held on Friday, 29 July 2016, at 11 a. m. on Židovski trg (between the synagogue and Židovski stolp). In case of bad weather, the event will be held in Maribor Synagogue at Židovska ulica 4.

The event is organized in cooperation with Frekvenca, the socio-cultural association of the active and restless, and Terne Roma – Young Roma Society as part of the Stone Tears project. The latter is financially supported by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA; No. 2014-419) and Maribor Municipality. In 2016, the project is supported also by Elektro Maribor.
