On 26th of April 1944, the occupying authorities ordered an assembly of Prekmurje Jews, then the largest Jewish community on Slovenian soil, in the synagogues in Murska Sobota and Lendava. From there they were deported first to Čakovec and then to Nagykanizsa and finally to Auschwitz. In this camp, most Jews were killed immediately upon arrival. Only a handful of Slovenian Jews survived the Holocaust.

On the anniversary of the beginning of mass deportations of Jews from Prekmurje to Nazi death camps, the Center of Jewish Cultural Heritage Synagogue Maribor and Agencia Toš@Tosch on Wednesday, 26th of April 2017, kindly invite you to a memorial event.

The event will start at 6 pm in the Synagogue Maribor, Židovska ulica 4, with the presentation of the book Vladek’s Path to the Unknown: Chronicle of a Jewish Family from Murska Sobota. Interview with the author dr. Bojan Zadravec will be led by dr. Cvetka Hedget Tóth.

At 7 pm, we invite you to the Smail Festić International Cultural Center, Židovska ulica 12, to the presentation of a virtual memorial against the Holocaust oblivion by Mihael Toš and the Achtung Auschwitz project by Zlatko Kraljić.

The memorial event is being prepared as part of the Stone Tears project, which was supported by the International Holocaust Remembrance Association (IHRA) in 2014-2016. The programs of the Center of Jewish Cultural Heritage Synagogue Maribor are financed by the Municipality of Maribor.
