Recommendations for teaching and learning about the Holocaust

18. 01. 2021

We cordially invite you to the webinar Recommendations for teaching and learning about the Holocaust.

The seminar will be held on Monday, 18 January 2021, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and will take place via the Microsoft Teams online platform. One of the aims of the seminar is also the reflection and exchange of good ideas among teachers to commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day, which will take place on 27 January.

Applications are accepted at the web address info@sinagogamaribor.si until Friday, 15 January 2021, at 2:00 p.m. Registered participants will receive the link immediately after the registration deadline.

The seminar will be divided into three sections:

– In the first part, the film Letters to Erika Fürst will be presented. Erika Fürst, who will soon turn 90, survived the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp and is one of the last surviving victims of the Holocaust. For many years, she has been sharing her life experiences especially with young people, and for her work in raising awareness about the Holocaust and preserving the memory of its victims, she received the Golden Order of Merit of the Republic of Slovenia. The film was created in cooperation with the Center of Jewish Cultural Heritage Synagogue Maribor and Draga Kobala Maribor Elementary School (length: 45 minutes, moderator: Marjetka Bedrač).

Recommendations for teaching and learning about the Holocaust will be presented in the second part. The recommendations were prepared by an expert team within the International Holocaust Remembrance Association (IHRA), and the Slovenian translation of the recommendations prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia was supplemented with an introductory historical context focused on the history of the Second World War in Slovenia. The recommendations are publicly available on the ZRSŠ website (session duration: 45 minutes, moderator: Vojko Kunaver).

– The third part of the seminar will be devoted to presentations of good practices in the field of teaching about the Holocaust, among which the Crocus Project will also be presented. This project has been taking place in Slovenia for the third year in a row, and in this year’s version, due to the covid-19 pandemic, the participating mentors also encouraged a slightly different approach to the implementation of the project (session duration: 30 minutes, moderator: Marjetka Bedrač).

The seminar is organized by the Center of Jewish Cultural Heritage Synagogue Maribor and the Institute of Education of the Republic of Slovenia in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia.

Participants of the webinar receive a certificate of participation.
