World War II was one of the darkest chapters in the history of Judaism in Slovenia. At that time the most powerful Jewish community lived in Prekmurje, particularly in the area of Lendava (Hungarian Lendva, German Unter-Limbach) and Murska Sobota (Hungarian Muraszombat, German Olsnitz). In 1944 they suffered a fatal blow by mass destruction in Nazi concentration camps; most Jews died in the notorious Auschwitz.

As part of our endeavours to fully present Holocaust history and its consequences, the CJCH Synagogue Maribor prepared the third volume of the collection of scientific papers “Jews in Slovenia: History and Holocaust”. All three volumes in the series of scientific papers collections are instrumental for a better understanding this dark period of the 20th century history in Slovenia. In the tragedy of the Holocaust, that has not evaded the Slovenian area, the pre-war Jewish community in Slovenia – amongst others – suffered greatly; it was considerably decimated and almost fully destroyed. After the end of World War II, only the remains of its remains remained.

The collection of scientific papers will be presented on Thursday, 9 October 2014, at 10 a.m. in the Museum of National Liberation Maribor (Ul. heroja Tomšiča 5 – Heroj Tomšič Street 5, Maribor) by the editors and authors of several collections’ papers.

All three volumes of the “Jews in Slovenia: History and the Holocaust” are part of the project activities of the “Shoah – Let Us Remember”; since 2011, this project is focused on uncovering the veils of the lesser known history of the Holocaust and Anti-Semitism in Slovenia and is financially supported by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance – IHRA and the Municipality of Maribor.
