European Days of Jewish Culture 2023: Memory

European Days of Jewish Culture 2023: Memory

29. 08. 2023
– 18. 10. 2023

The European Days of Jewish Culture (abbreviated as EDJC) is a pan-European project that has been running since 2000. With it, the organizers throughout Europe strive to shed light on the diversity and richness of Judaism and its historical significance in the local, regional and national environment by organizing various events – conferences, concerts, theatre performances, guided tours and other activities – which take place all over Europe at the same time, and at the same time promote values such as dialogue, (co)knowledge and recognition of the different, and exchange.

The theme of the European Days of Jewish Culture 2023 is MEMORY.

Memory is the crucible in which Judaism was forged, whether that memory is collective or individual, given through history or narrative. It is preserved and transmitted through memory. Every Saturday in prayer, the Jewish home recalls the two commemorative commandments, which arrange time according to existential values. The memory of creation and the Sinai covenant are added to this by the real and symbolic presence of every consciousness at the giving of the law, which implies collective responsibility before the law, as well as the ability to make sense of existence, but not without learning to question. Through a transference inscribed in emotionality, Jewish rituals and festivals reinforce these connections between memory, law, individual and collective responsibilities, and the questioning of meaning.
